The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) has already surpassed the number of Olympic rankings of athletes and teams achieved in Lima 2019 during the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. The country has so far secured 35 places for Paris 2024 thanks to the continental event, after having stamped his passport in seven sports: boxing, handball, horse riding, modern pentathlon, swimming, tennis and table tennis. During the last edition, there were 29 places for Tokyo 2020.
“This was the main objective of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) here at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games: to guarantee as many athletes and teams as possible qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. We are happy to have exceeded this number, because there are still many modalities to end their participation. I understand that the first step has been taken, but our idea is to continue ranking. We will only know the number at the end, but we “We are satisfied with what we are building,” said Rogério Sampaio, COB Director General and Head of Brazil’s Mission to Santiago 2023.
In the Chilean capital, the country has the largest delegation in its history in a foreign competition, with more than a thousand people, including 621 athletes (342 men and 279 women). Brazil is third in the medal standings, with 34 gold, 42 silver and 34 bronze (110 total), behind the United States and Mexico.
“One of the goals of the Brazilian team at the Pan American Games is to win the most Olympic places in different sports, and the athletes have responded. We have already obtained a total of 35 places, in addition to two athletes reserve equestrians”, underlines Mariana Mello, responsible for sports planning and performance and deputy head of the Brazilian mission to Santiago 2023.
The last vacancy occurred this Monday 30 with the mixed table tennis duo formed by Vitor Ishiy and Bruna Takahashi, who reached the decision after beating Canadians Eugene Wang and Mo Zhang 4-2 (11/9, 11/ 5, 10/12, 11/4, 6/11 and 11/8). The Brazilians will compete for the title this Monday, at 7:40 p.m., against Jorge Campos and Daniela Fonseca, from Cuba.
