The absence of Celine Dion from the list of the 200 best singers in history, recently published by the American edition of the magazine “Rolling Stone”, sparked a revolt this week on social networks. “Is Celine Dion nowhere on the list? Celine Dion is the greatest singer of all time,” wrote a fan on Twitter, a platform where netizens are campaigning critically.

The list is led by Aretha Franklin, followed by Whitney Houston, Sam Cooke and Billie Holiday. The top ten positions also include Mariah Carey, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé, Otis Redding and Al Green.
Canadian Celine Dion has been left out of the roster, which includes names like Rosalía, Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra, Adele and rocker Ozzy Osbourne. There are those who speak of “contempt” and even a “crime against humanity”, as one fan of the artist jokingly suggests.
Brazilians on the list
A trio of Bahians ensure the Brazilian presence on the list. João Gilberto (1931-2019) appears in 81st position, Gal Costa, who died at the age of 77 last November, comes in 90th place for best singer, and Caetano Veloso is ranked in 108th place.
Understand: Celine Dion, who canceled her tour due to health issues, will have a life of ups and downs chronicled in a documentary
João Gilberto and Gal Costa were portrayed by Argentinian journalist Ernesto Lechner, a specialist in Latin music. Of the singer-songwriter, Lechner (who has confused his birthplace, calling the Bahian Juazeiro a carioca) says he was one of the founding architects of bossa nova, “one of the most that has emerged in Latin America”, alongside Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes.
Gal is described as “the most transcendent singer of the post-bossa era”. Profiled by American Michaelangelo Matos, Caetano is compared to Bob Dylan (15th on the list), “a revolutionary rocker with a strong literary bent”.
