The government has provided resources to fight the fires in Spain

Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Municipal Relief Operations Center in Gondomar, the minister said he was monitoring the situation in Spain and that on Friday and today he had spoken with Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

“In Spain, more than two thousand people have already been evacuated due to the serious circumstances they are experiencing. I was able to speak yesterday [sexta-feira] and today with the Spanish Minister of the Interior to also express our solidarity and, if necessary, to make our resources available to our friends in Spain. It’s not necessary at the moment,” he said.

The fire in the Valencia region has already destroyed 4,000 hectares, an area of more than 4,000 football pitches, and forced 1,500 people from their homes.

More than 500 agents fight the flames on the ground. Eight communities have been evacuated and the fire is still not in sight.

It is the first major fire of the year in Spain, and it is not yet clear what could have caused it.

In 2022, 493 fires destroyed a record 307,000 hectares of land in Spain.

“Yesterday the gravity was such that in addition to the two thousand people evacuated, they had to take out the firefighters and their own vehicles to protect themselves from the severity and the spread of the fires,” added José Luís Carneiro.
