Justin Trudeau is the new Prime Minister of Canada, following Monday’s federal election (19) which gave the Liberal Party an absolute majority, after almost a decade of Conservative government.

Trudeau, 43, son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau (1968 to 1979), will lead the government after his party won an absolute majority in the new House of Commons, with 338 parliamentary seats.

The Liberal Party was the third political force in the previous legislature.

“Canadians across the country sent a message this Monday: It’s time for change, my friends, for real change,” Justin Trudeau said in his victory speech in Montreal, where he lives and was elected.

The new Prime Minister also said that “the positive and optimistic view of public life is not a naive dream”, as it can be “a powerful force for change”.

The Liberals elected at least 182 deputies, whereas only 170 were needed to obtain an absolute majority.

The Conservatives elected 99 MPs, the NPD (Social Democrat) 43, the Bloc Québécois ten and the Green Party only one. The votes of three electoral districts have yet to be counted.

Former Prime Minister, Conservative Stephen Harper, who had led the executive since 2006, resigned from the party leadership.

The Conservatives reigned with 159 seats in the House of Commons. The NDP was the second largest political force, with 95 seats, and the Liberals had only 36 MPs. The other four seats were occupied by an independent, a representative of the Green Party, a representative of the Bloc Québécois and a dissident.

Due to the increase in population, 30 federal districts were created, including 15 in the province of Ontario, six for Alberta and British Columbia, and three in Quebec.
