The Lula government does not participate in the declaration of 55 countries against Daniel Ortega – Politica

The Lula government decided not to sign the joint declaration of 55 countries, which denounced the crimes of Daniel Ortega, president of Nicaragua, during a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council last Friday (3/ 3).

According UOL, Itamaraty, – Ministry of Foreign Affairs – is following the situation closely and even suggested changes in the final text asking for a place for dialogue. The proposal was not accepted and Brazil therefore chose not to adhere to the text, deemed “inadequate”.

According to the UN, the regime of President Daniel Ortega has committed crimes against humanity. “Widespread human rights violations amounting to crimes against humanity are being committed against civilians by the Nicaraguan government for political reasons.”

The report further states that “the alleged abuses – which include extrajudicial executions, arbitrary arrests, torture, arbitrary deprivation of nationality and of the right to stay in one’s country – are not an isolated phenomenon, but the product of the deliberate dismantling of democratic institutions and destruction of civic and democratic spaceā€.

The United States, Australia, Canada, Germany and France are some of the countries that have signed the joint declaration. The Latin American countries Chile, Peru, Guatemala, Paraguay and Ecuador also signed the declaration.
