Sugar and corn performance contributed to January’s second-best result in cargo handling
O sugar was the high point in cargo handling at the port of Santos in January, with a growth of 37.2%, totaling 1.2 million tonnes, compared to the same period of 2022.
Commodity, according to the Port, was the highlight of export cargoes, accompanied by corn, which also performed well, totaling 1.4 million, an increase of 43.2%. The performance of these loads increased the movement of dry bulk by 0.9%.
The general movement in January reached 10.1 million tons, a reduction of 4.7% compared to the same month last year (10.6 million tons), a period in which the historic record of January was recorded. The decline was primarily driven by the 51% reduction in soybean complex shipments and the 17.8% reduction in fertilizer shipments. Thus, January/2023 is the second best historical result for the first month of the year.
Shipments reached 6.8 million tonnes, down 4%, while releases totaled 3.4 million tonnes, down 6.1%. Container movement totaled 352,855 TEUs (equivalent to a 20-foot container), a reduction of 8.1% compared to January last year (384,073 TEUs), a period in which the historic record of the month has been recorded. The flow of ships recorded 399 ships, which is 2.8% more than in January 2022.
The Port of Santos’ participation in the Brazilian commercial flow during the first month of the year was 27.6%. About 24.4% of transactions had China as a partner country. The state of São Paulo still holds the largest share of foreign trade transactions through the port of Santos, which reached 57.4%.
