Brazil won 1-0 with a goal at the end of the match and showed changes in lineup and style of play.
The Brazilian women’s football team made its debut under coach Arthur Elias by winning a friendly match against Canada this Saturday (28). Brazil won the match 1–0, with a goal scored in stoppage time, demonstrating significant changes in both lineup and style of play compared to their previous World Cup performance.
Arthur Elias, known for his work in charge of Corinthians, where he won several titles, including national and international championships, put together an aggressive team to face the Canadians. The initial lineup included Luana and Ary Borges in midfield, as well as five attacking players: Tamires and Adriana on the wings, and the attacking trio of Geyse, Marta and Cristiane. Notably, Marta and Cristiane had not played together for the national team in two and a half years.
Cristiane, who has not been called up since 2021, was one of the surprises in the starting XI, compared to the team’s last match at the World Cup, under Swedish coach Pia Sundhage. In addition to her, other changes included Lauren in defense and Geyse in attack, both already called up by Pia for the World Cup.
The match was marked by emotional moments, with the Canadians finding the net, but having the goal disallowed for offside. Brazil had its best opportunity with Adriana, whose cross shot was saved by goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.
In the second half, Arthur Elias made changes to the team, bringing on Gabi Nunes and Debinha to replace Cristiane and Geyse. At minute 13, the legendary Marta left the field to the applause of the public, giving way to Bia Zaneratto. The Brazilian team showed an improvement in their offensive performance throughout the final phase, but met resistance from Sheridan, who made important saves, preventing goals from Debinha, twice, and Ary.
However, with the match heading for a draw, Brazil managed to win in stoppage time. In the 48th minute, full-back Antônia regained possession in the middle and found Debinha, who finished at the entry of the surface. The ball was deflected twice before finding the Canadian net, sealing the victory for the Brazilian team.
The two teams will face each other again this Tuesday (31) at the Wanderers Stadium, in Halifax, Canada. Arthur Elias’ victory in his debut as coach of the women’s national team brings hope to fans of Brazilian women’s football, showing a fresh start and a more aggressive and promising style of play for the future.
