The Australian, whose rivalry with American Katie Ledecky lit up the Tokyo Games, has qualified with her country’s team for next month’s world championships in Fukuoka, Japan, after winning the 400 m freestyle during a trial in Melbourne. Her time of 3:58.47 was better than the 4:00.49 set in April, but fell short of the world record set by Canadian Summer McIntosh.

McIntosh, 16, broke Titmus’ previous world record with a time of 3:56.08 at the Canadian Trials in March. Titmus, Ledecky and McIntosh are ready to fight for the 400m freestyle title in Fukuoka.

Titmus said the three swimmers were “pretty equal” before Fukuoka, but McIntosh had relatively little experience in big events. “I feel like Summer hasn’t had that experience yet, competing on the international stage under great pressure, so it will be interesting to see how she does,” Titmus concluded.
