The Russian invasion was crucial to the Canadian conquest

Malaga (Spain) – Champions for the first time in the Davis Cup, the Canadians would not have achieved this feat in 2022 without the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Indeed, the Canadian team had been beaten by the Netherlands in the qualifying phase and had failed to qualify for the group stage, but with the punishment of the Russian teams because of the war, they ended up inheriting the vacancy and then managed to make history.

Deprived of their main players, the team led by Frank Dancevic was no match for the Dutch during the confrontation which took place in March and lost all four games played, without winning a single set. Just days before this clash between Canada and the Netherlands, the ITF announced that teams from Russia and Belarus were suspended from international competitions, unable to play the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup in 2022.

Current champions Davis, the Russians were guaranteed in the group stage, which left room for one of the losers of the qualifying phase to inherit this vacancy. Also in March, the ITF announced that Canada would take the place left by Russia, finding themselves in Group B, alongside Spain, South Korea and Serbia. They won the first two, lost to the Serbs and finished in second place.

Classified for the finals, the Canadians met in the quarter-finals with Germany, who had finished top of Group C. They beat the Germans 2-1, repeated the feat in the semi-finals against the Italians, also ending the confrontation only in the doubles, and it was only in the final that the team led by Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov managed to win their two singles matches and thus become champions.
