The White House denies having received an official request for Bolsonaro’s extradition from the United States

The White House has reported that the US government has not received an official request from Brazilian authorities for Bolsonaro’s extradition.

United States National Security Secretary Jake Sullivan informed on Monday 9 that the US government has not received an official request from the Brazilian authorities for the extradition of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) , which is located in Florida.

“If we received such requests, we would treat them as we always do: we would treat them seriously,” he assured, during a conversation with reporters in Mexico City, where the President of the United States, Joe Biden, participates in a meeting with the leaders of Mexico and Canada. .

Sullivan explained that any issues regarding Bolsonaro’s visa would be handled by the State Department, not the White House directly. According to him, the American government is not in “direct contact” with the former Brazilian president. “Therefore, I cannot say for sure where he is,” he said.

Since Sunday 8, a growing group of US lawmakers have championed the expulsion of Bolsonaro from the United States, after supporters of the former president carried out a series of bombings in Brasilia. The episode has been compared to the invasion of the Capitol, seat of the US Congress, by voters of former US President Donald Trump on January 6, 2021.

Phone call from Biden

Amid the repercussions of the attacks in Brasília this Sunday, Sullivan said US President Joe Biden should speak to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) “at some point”, but clarified that there is no still had no phone call scheduled.

Sullivan stressed that Washington will continue to express support for Brazilian democracy and the “peaceful transfer” of power. “Brazil’s democratic institutions will prevail, the will of the Brazilian people will be respected, the freely elected Brazilian leader will govern Brazil and will not be deterred or overthrown,” he said, speaking to reporters.
