This Tuesday (18), the death of the Canadian tourist who fell this week in the Iguaçu Falls was confirmed. According to a report by O Globo newspaper, the incident happened on Monday (17), when the victim was trying to take a selfie from the Argentinian side of the podium.
The man, who has not been identified, was 60 years old and was staying at a hotel in Puerto Iguazú. According to witnesses, he would have climbed on the railing to take the photo, but lost his balance and fell. His body was found by employees of a company that performs nautical tours in the area, near Tancredo Neves, a bridge that connects the Argentine city where he was with Foz do Iguaçu. After finding the corpse, officials notified the Navy.
Teams from Iguaçu National Park carried out a relentless search in hopes of finding the living man, however, the high flow of water from the Iguaçu and Uruguay rivers made the process difficult. The region has been suffering from heavy rains since last week. According to data from Copel (Companhia Paranaense de Energia), interpreted by the G1, the Iguaçu Falls had on Thursday (13) the second highest water flow recorded since 1997. There were more than 16.5 million liters per second in flow. The flow rate considered normal is 1.5 million liters per second.
