On Friday (22), Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of the country, Canada, and Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, paid a visit to the Canadian Parliament.
At one point, the Speaker of Parliament decided to pay tribute to a 98-year-old man who was in the gallery of the building, Yaroslav Hunka.
Rota said the man, who fought in World War II, was “a Ukrainian hero and a Canadian hero, and we thank him for his service.”
However, Hunka fought in a unit of Nazis against the Red Army of the Soviet Union.
And the people in the room gave the man who fought for the Nazis a standing ovation.
According to the BBC, during World War II, thousands of Ukrainians fought for the Nazis, but many more joined the Soviet-led Red Army, which was the main army of the Allies.
Cija, an organized group of Canadian Jews, said it was very problematic that a Nazi would be honored.
Russia also criticized the invitation to Hunka.
