Two children have died after a bus crashed into a daycare center near the Canadian city of Montreal, police said on Wednesday, in an act witnesses say may have been intentional.
Six other children taken to hospital after the incident “are out of danger”, said Erika Landry, spokesperson for the police in Laval, where the nursery is located.
“The driver, a 51-year-old man, was arrested for manslaughter and reckless driving,” he added.
Laval police told AFP that they had surrounded “a large perimeter” to restrict traffic around the establishment, which was partially destroyed.
The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. (1:30 p.m. GMT). Several children were trapped under the vehicle and were rescued by rescuers. They were taken care of by the Sainte-Justine hospital.
Television footage showed the bus inside the facility and part of the roof above the vehicle.
“I helped pull the driver, who got off the bus,” a relative told Radio Canada before bursting into tears. According to his wife, the man was “half naked” and witnesses saw him “deliberately throwing himself on the crib”.
Now police are investigating whether the act was intentional.
