“We support Brazil and the defense of its democratic institutions” and “we look forward to working with President [brasileiro, Luiz Inácio] Lula [da Silva] to achieve results for our countries and for the American continent,” these heads of state and government said in a joint statement on the eve of the Summit of North American Leaders, which will meet in Mexico City.
“Our governments support the free expression of the will of the Brazilian people,” defended the leaders.
On Sunday, supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro invaded and vandalized the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court, Congress and the Planalto Palace in Brasília, forcing police to intervene to restore order and prompting condemnation from the International community.
The military police succeeded in regaining control of the headquarters of the three powers, during an operation which resulted in at least 300 detainees.
The invasion began after activists from Brazil’s far-right, supporters of the former president, who was defeated by Lula da Silva in last October’s elections, called for demonstrations on the Esplanada dos Ministérios.
However, Federal Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes dismissed Federal District Governor Ibaneis Rocha for 90 days, considering that both the governor and former Security Secretary and former Bolsonaro Justice Minister Anderson Torres acted with negligence and omission.
