A World Cup 2023 is the main event women’s football of the year, where the best players in the sport compete in search of the most important title of the modality. Fifa is treating the dispute as a turning point for the sport. It is therefore natural that the highest paid female athletes in the world participate in the competition. If sport loves Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo It is Kylian Mbappe are among the highest paid in the world, the same cannot be said for Australian and New Zealand Cup stars such as Alex Morgan, Alexia Putellas, Megan Rapinoe It is Martha.
Earning significantly less than the men, the players do not even appear on the list of the ten highest paid athletes compiled by the forbes. This fact only underlines the importance of one of the most debated topics in women’s football: the difference between wages, rewards and payments for women compared to men’s football.
In this tournament, teams like Canada and Jamaica have faced issues of lack of funding from their own federations, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t players who receive high values. A forbes magazine has released one of its lists featuring the highest paid female players at the 2023 World Cup.
In the methodology used by the publication, on-field revenue, such as salaries and prize payments, is added to non-game revenue, such as advertising and sponsorship deals. According to this method, the American team is the one with the most players in the top 10: there are 9 athletes from the American national team and only one other player of another nationality, the Spanish Alexia Putellas in the third place. There are no Brazilian women on the Forbes list.
The list is dominated by Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, which highlights the strength of the two American players. Symbol of the generation that won a second world championship, Morgan earns $7.1 million a year. Rapinoe wins $7 million. The American football league is considered the strongest women’s league on the planet, which contributes to the fact that the players who work there also receive better salaries. Americans Trinity Rodman, Crystal Dunn, Julie Ertz, Sophia Smith, Lindsey Horan, Rose Lavelle and Sofia Huerta complete the top 10.
The scenario changes, however, when only the salaries received by the athletes are considered. At the top of the list, a surprise from the start: the Australian Sam Kerr, from Chelsea. Extremely talented, the attacker is not as popular as her other teammates, but has signed a lucrative contract to strengthen the London club. Just like on the Forbes list, Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe are in the top 3.
The other positions, however, seem to reflect the quality of the players. Norway’s Ada Hegerberg is fourth, followed by Brazil’s Marta and France’s Wendie Renard, who are tied for fifth. Completing the Top 8, there are still the French Amandine Henry and the Canadian Christine Sinclair.
