Williams formalizes American Logan Sargeant as 2023 F1 starter

Williams has made young American Logan Sargeant official as its driver for the 2023 Formula 1 season. He will take the place of Canadian Nicholas Latifi, who found himself without a seat next year.

“We are delighted to officially announce Logan as our driver for next year, having obtained the Super License after the last F2 event of the season in Abu Dhabi. Logan completes our exciting driver line-up for 2023 alongside Alex “Williams announced, referring to his fellow driver, Thailand’s Alexander Albon.

“Since joining our Drivers’ Academy at the end of 2021, Logan has been able to integrate fully into the team in the simulator and, more recently, on track during the four free practice sessions he took part in. We look forward to to see him in Formula 1. We are here to support you in this adventure,” said team boss Jost Capito.

Logan Sargeant was already groomed by Williams to take over one of the team’s cars. He participated in four free practices this season (Abu Dhabi, Brazil, Mexico and the United States) and obtained the 40 points, thanks to Formula 2, necessary to acquire the Superlicence, which guarantees him the right to race in Formula 1 .

“It is a great honor and a dream come true to have the opportunity to compete in Formula 1 with Williams Racing. Being part of the Williams Driver Academy last year gave me an important platform to develop myself as a driver and prepare for the next chapter. I’m ready and excited to be part of this journey as the team looks to move up the grid.”

The United States has a driver on the grid again, something that hasn’t happened since 2015, when Alexander Rossi, who contested five races with the Manor team. Before him, Scott Speed, in 2007, represented the country.

“To be able to give Logan the opportunity to race in Formula 1 for Williams Racing next year, after being an integral part of our Drivers’ Academy, is a proud moment for the team. F1 is an motivation for all other Academy riders and demonstrates the legitimacy of the program and the platform it offers. We don’t just prepare him on the track, but we work hard during the winter off-track to make sure he is in the best possible position to start 2023,” concluded sporting director Sven Smeets.

Sargeant is added to the list of rookies in Formula 1 in 2024. In addition to them, Oscar Piastri will be at McLaren and Nyck de Vries will drive at AlphaTauri.
