Two other teams that will be in the 2022 Cup faced each other this Thursday (17). In the United Arab Emirates, Canada scored a victory against Japan, with a penalty goal scored in added time, 2-1.
The game’s goals were scored by Japan’s Yuki Soma, and Steven Vitória and Lucas Cavallini left their mark for Canada under England coach John Herdman.
busy game
It was the selection of Japan who opened the scoring in the duel disputed in the United Arab Emirates. With only nine minutes left, Leganés midfielder Gaku Shibasaki made a fine throw for Yuki Soma. The striker grazed the ball, but enough to take it back from goalkeeper Milan Borjan.
Canada’s response came in the 21st minute. After a corner, Hutchinson deflected and Luso-Canadian Steven Vitória only had to push deep into the net. All equal in 1 against 1.
Until the end of the initial phase, the Canadian team created several opportunities and failed to convert any of them. In all, there were 12 total kicks, only two of them on target, compared to Japan’s three.
The second half went the same way. The duo of Hoilett and Jonathan David created problems for the Japanese defence, but Canadian kicks rarely found their way to the goal.
Looking for the winning goal, Canada still saw Japan hit the post in the dying moments with Miki Yamane. The team lost the opportunity in front and compromised in defense by committing a penalty. Lucas Cavallini dug in and scored: Canada 2, Japan 1.
Now the next commitment of both teams is valid and for the World Cup. For Group E, Japan faces Germany, while Canada, for Group F, faces Belgium.
