Women’s team loses to Canada on penalties and says goodbye to Tó

The Brazilian women’s football team bid farewell to the Olympic Games in Tokyo (Japan) this Friday morning (30). The Brazilians were eliminated by Canada 4-3 on penalties, after regulation time ended in a 0-0 draw. The quarter-final match was played at Miyagi Stadium in Rifu City.

Marta, Debinha and Érika scored for Brazil. For Canada, Fleming, Lawrence, Léon and Gilles converted. The duo Andressa Alves and Rafaelle wasted their shots, just as the Canadian Sinclair failed to find the net.

In the first, there were few scoring opportunities. Brazil attacked for the first time in danger in the 14th minute with a shot from left back Tamiris over the opponent’s goal. At 24, it was Canada’s turn to try their luck on a low shot from midfielder Fleming to the left of goalkeeper Bárbara. The first stage continued with a lot of fighting from both teams, but little creativity.

In the final phase, the Brazilians and Canadians continued with balanced performances. At 13, the team led by Pia Sundhage suffered a small scare when Bruna Benites headed the crossbar. In the 25th minute, the Brazilian Debinha responded with a cross shot from the edge of the penalty area, causing goalkeeper Labbé to stop. In the end, Canada tried to apply pressure, but did not convert its dominance into a scoring opportunity.

Extension

After 90 minutes, extra time began with both teams tired and cautious, as a goal at this stage of the match could be decisive. Given this situation, the first half was full of struggles, but with little visibility from both teams.

In the second stage, the Canadians were shocked by Leon’s cross kick with less than a minute remaining. The ball went to the right of Bárbara’s goal. Brazil responded with danger at 7 with a shot from striker Debinha, from the edge of the area, which passed close to Labbé’s right post. Subsequently, the green-yellow team pressed and at 12 almost opened the scoring on a header from defender Érika, forcing the intervention of Labbé.
