World No. 1 Swiatek advances by losing just one match at Australian Open

This Friday (20), world No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland was responsible for the fastest triumph of the day, taking just 55 minutes to dispatch Spain’s Cristina Bucsa with 6/0 and 6/ 1 devastating. Classified for the round of 16, the leader of the classification will now have a good duel against Kazakh Elena Rybakina, from Kazakhstan, who needed three sets to beat North American Danielle Collins, in partials of 6/2, 5/7 and 6/2.

18-year-old tennis player Coco Gauff of the United States defeated her compatriot Bernarda Pera in straight sets, with the final score of 6/3 and 6/2, after 1h35 of play. She will face Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia , in the next phase, which easily beat the Ukrainian Kateryna Baindl, in partials of 6/3 and 6/0.

Double champion of the Australian Open (2012 and 2013), Victoria Azarenka remains in the competition. American Jessica Pegula, seeded No. 3 at the Australian Open, took on Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk. Pegula didn’t give the Ukrainian a chance and closed the match 2-0, partials of 6/0 and 6/2. In the next round, she will face 20-seeded Czech Barbora Krejcikova, who defeated fellow Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets with partials of 6/2 and 6/3.

In men’s singles, the Canadian FĂ©lix Auger-Aliassime remains firm at the Australian Open. He beat Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo in 3 sets to 1, partials of 6/1, 3/6, 6/1 and 6/4. In the round of 16, he faces the Czech Jiri Lehecka who, at 21, surprised the Briton Cameron Norrie with a fine victory 3-2, partials of 6/7 (8-10), 6/3, 3/6, 6/1 and 6/4.

Current world number 11 Hubert Hurkacz of Poland won another battle in five sets and reached the Australian Open round of 16 for the first time. He overtook Denis Shapovalov of Canada this Friday in 3:37 from the start, with partials of 7/6 (7-3), 6/4, 1/6, 4/6 and 6/3.

Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas had some work to do but he prevailed against Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands and won the place for the next phase with a victory by 3-0, partials of 6/2, 7/6 ( 7-5) and 6 /3. In the round of 16, Tsitsipas will face Italy’s Jannik Sinner, who qualified by beating Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in a 3-2 loss.

The surprise of the day was due to the elimination of Daniil Medvedev. Finalist of the last two editions, the former Russian world number 1 could not overcome the North American Sebastian Korda, 31st in the standings, who closed the 3-hour match in two sets with partials of 7/6 (9-7), 6/3 and 7/6 (7-4). Korda’s next opponent in Melbourne will be Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.

The Brazilians had a good day in the disputes today. In men’s doubles, Marcelo Melo and Mackenzie McDonald of the United States withdrew from competition due to the American’s issue.
