After losing his smartphone in a taxi last weekend, Canadian Jeremy Cook, 18, tried to retrieve his device. However, while following the instructions of a tracking app, Cook was murdered. The information comes from the websites “CBC News” and “Business Insider”.
According to London, Ontario police officer Ken Steeves, the young man and a relative went to the location where the stolen smartphone was allegedly located. When they arrived, they were confronted by three men in a car.
The conversation between Cook and the men became tense and the car drove off. The young man, however, held the driver’s door and was shot several times. He died after a while because he could not bear the severity of his injuries.
The boy’s smartphone and the car where the shooters were have already been found. Now, local police are investigating security camera footage to find out what really happened.
The young man’s death prompted local police to warn people who were trying to recover their stolen devices through monitoring apps. “These apps are great tools. However, if you suspect there is a risk, we encourage people to contact the police,” said Constable Steeves.
