Zelensky invites Lula to visit Kyiv

Lula renewed his proposal around the creation of a group of neutral countries to arbitrate the peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, in the conflict which has lasted for more than a year.

“I reaffirmed Brazil’s willingness to dialogue with other countries and to participate in any initiative around the construction of peace and dialogue. War cannot interest anyone,” Lula wrote after the conversation.

Zelensky said he reaffirmed last week’s invitation to Lula to visit Ukraine and thanked the Brazilian for backing the resolution passed by a large majority at the UN that condemned the Russian invasion of Israel. Ukraine and demanded the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops.

“We stress the importance of maintaining the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of States. We also discussed diplomatic efforts to bring peace to Ukraine and the world,” the Ukrainian wrote on Twitter.

In recent weeks, Lula has discussed with US President Joe Biden and German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz the idea of ​​creating a so-called “peace club”, but neither has showed no enthusiasm. for the proposal. Both countries are kyiv’s largest arms suppliers.

Putin ‘understands’ Brazil’s position

Russia, however, said it welcomed the proposal. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzi praised the Brazilian government for not having “succumbed to pressure” from Western powers and refusing to send arms to Ukraine.

The Brazilian government maintains its position of not taking sides in the war, although Lula has publicly condemned Russia for its aggressions in Ukraine. The assessment is that Brazil’s conciliatory attitude could give the country a leading role in future peace negotiations.

During a meeting on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi, Russian Sergei Lavrov told his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira that Putin understood Brazil’s position on the conflict.
