Zelensky repeats Putin and enacts sanctions against pro-war figures

London – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky repeated what his opponent Vladimir Putin has been doing since the start of the war in Ukraine and imposed economic and access sanctions on 119 well-known figures from the Russian sports and cultural world for “ acting as propagandists for Russia”.

The decree published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic this Saturday (7) validates the list drawn up by the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, which includes three Ukrainian citizens, all accused of being “propagandists of death”, as declared on Twitter by the journalist Mykhaylo Podolyak, adviser to Zelensky, citing “direct or indirect requests to kill, capture or rob in Ukraine”.

Among those affected by the measure are popular media personalities, such as TV presenter Zhanna Badoyeva, who started her career on Ukrainian TV and now works for Russian network Pervy Kanal, and the TV presenter Leonid Yakubovich, one of Russia’s best-known television and internet personalities, who publicly supported the invasion.

Another sanctioned is the mighty Margarita Simonyan, general director of RT (Russia Today), the main Russian state media, banned in many countries. The journalist is one of Vladimir Putin’s closest and most loyal supporters.

Dmitry Kiselev, director of the state media company Rossiya Segodnya, is also on the list.

With sanctions, assets held by individuals in Ukraine are blockeds, like any business transaction.

They are prohibited from obtaining a visa or entering the country if they have a valid visa. The decree also includes the cessation of cultural exchanges and cooperation and the revocation of the awards they received in Ukraine.

The sanctions are valid for 10 years, according to the Russian news agency Tass.
