In an attempt to reach new fertilizer suppliers for Brazil in the face of looming shortages after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Minister of Agriculture, Teresa Cristina, traveled this Saturday (12), to Canada. On the program, conversations with Canadian businessmen and government officials on the possibility of increasing potash exports to Brazil.

“The trip is about talking to Canadians to see if we managed to get a bigger quantity than they already send us, to supply those possible supply bottlenecks that we might havedue to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” the minister said in a note released by the Ministry of Agriculture.

In Ottawa, meetings are scheduled with the presidents of potash producing and exporting companies located in the country, in addition to representatives of the Canadian government. This Sunday (13), the minister is meeting the board of directors of Brasil Potash (Potássio Brasil), made up of Canadian investors. On Monday (14), he should meet the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Canada, Paul Samson. Also on Monday, Teresa Cristina will meet with the presidents of Gensource, Nutrien, Xensource, Canpotex and Fertilizer Canada.

Currently, Brazil is the world’s fourth largest fertilizer consumer, responsible for around 8% of this volume and is the world’s largest importer. The country imports about 85% of all fertilizers used in domestic agricultural production.. In the case of potassium, the percentage imported is around 95%.

The return of the delegation, according to a ministry statement, is scheduled for Monday and will arrive in Brazil on Tuesday (15).
