The government published a decree formalizing the return of the visa requirement for tourists from the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan, this Wednesday (03). The measure will come into force on October 1 this year.
In 2019, former President Jair Bolsonaro issued a decree exempting tourists from these countries from presenting a visa.
According to the rule that was repealed, tourists could stay in Brazil for up to 180 days, without the need for a visa, for tourism, business, transit, artistic and sports activities or in exceptional situations of national interest.
In March this year, President Lula ordered Itamaraty to request the document again. The assessment was based on the principle of reciprocity, since Brazilian tourists need a visa to visit these countries.
The government conducted a survey which revealed that there has not been a huge increase in the flow of tourists since Brazil stopped requiring visas for the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan.
