Max Verstappen wins in Canada and equals Ayrton Senna

Dutch driver Max Verstappen (Red Bull) won this Sunday the Canadian Grand Prix Formula 1, the eighth race of the 2023 World Cup, and equaled the 41 triumphs won by Brazilian Ayrton Senna.

Verstappen led the 70 laps of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, crossing the finish line after 1:33.58.348 hours, 9.570 seconds ahead of Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), who finished second, with Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) in third, at 14.168.

It was the 100th victory for Red Bull in the Formula 1 world championship and the 41st for Max Verstappen, thus equaling Ayrton Senna (fatal accident on the track in May 1994) in the list of most victories, both in fifth place, 10 triumphs from fourth, the Frenchman Alain Prost, who has 51, and 62 from the record holder, Lewis Hamilton (with 103).

“Winning the 100th GP for the team is incredible. Even I didn’t expect these numbers [41.ª vitória] . We made mistakes here and there, but we won, that’s the most important thing,” said the driver.

In Canada, Verstappen won the sixth victory of the season out of the eight races already contested (he only missed Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan), and the fourth in a row.

the dutch pilot was the main dominator of the championship this year and this Sunday leads from end to end.

Lewis Hamilton was also pleased with Mercedes’ developments, which allowed him to challenge Alonso’s Aston Martin and clearly overtake the two Ferraris, who finished fourth and fifth, with Monegasque Charles Leclerc and Spaniard Carlos Sainz respectively.

“It’s an honor to be fighting with two world champions. We still lose in the slow corners. We need more downforce and more efficiency. But we’re going in the right direction,” Hamilton said.

With Canada’s results, Max Verstappen reached 195 points in the championship, 69 more than Mexico’s Sérgio Pérez (Red Bull), who finished sixth and added the extra point for the fastest lap of the race.

Among the manufacturers, Red Bull already has 321 points, against 167 for Mercedes and 154 for Aston Martin. Ferrari is fourth with 122.
