Brazil squad begin training at Paulistano for Uruguay and Colombia qualifiers – 06/21/2022

The Brazilian men’s basketball team went to training on Tuesday for the last window of the first phase of the World Cup qualifiers, with matches against Uruguay and Colombia.

Brazil are playing away on June 30 against Uruguay, at 8:10 p.m., in Montevideo, and on July 3, at 9:40 p.m., against Colombia, in Barranquilla. Both matches are broadcast on ESPN Brazil. The group performed at noon at the hotel in São Paulo, and held their first practice session at Paulistano in the late afternoon.

Work continues at the club until the 28th, when the team travels to Uruguay. The duels are repeated the last window, when, in Franca, in the interior of São Paulo, Brazil beat the two rivals in matches with a full house and a good performance.

Gustavo De Conti’s list is based on athletes who have already been called up in recent windows, such as Georginho, Lucas Dias, Bruno Caboclo, Gabriel Jaú, Gui Deodato, Rafa Mineiro, Elinho and Lucas Mariano. Playmaker Marcelinho Huertas is back after a great season in Tenerife, and Rafa Luz from Bilbao.

The list also includes the arrival of youngster Rafael Munford, from Pinheiros; Renan Lenz, from Minas; Wesley Castro, of Mogi; and Danilo Fuzaro, from Bauru.

Brunão guest, Yago strengthens the group and Caboclo arrives on Saturday

The Brazilian team is counting on the presence of winger/pivot Brunão, 19, in training. One of the highlights of the Brazilian basketball season, the Paulistano player is the guest of the technical staff in the development process of young athletes. In the other window, Reynan, later MVP and South American Champion and in the Ideal Quintet and AmeriCup Under-18 runner-up, worked with the group in Franca.

In addition to him, the leader Yago, a constant presence on the lists of Gustavo De Conti, reinforces the workforce in training until his presentation in the national under-23 team on June 27. The Flamengo point guard is in Tiago Splitter’s call-up for the Globl Jam, a friendly tournament from July 5-10 that Brazil will play in Toronto, Canada against Canadians, USA and Italy.

Finally, winger/pivot Bruno Caboclo will perform on Saturday the 25th, when he begins training with the rest of the group. The athlete is in the United States to participate in training camps and has agreed with the technical commission to present him on this date.

World Cup qualifiers

Due to the format of the playoffs, the 16 teams of the Americas were separated in the first phase into four groups of four teams, forming groups A, B, C and D, with home and away matches within groups, totaling six matches. The top three from each group advance to the second phase, when groups E and F will be formed, with six teams each.

Leader of Group B, Brazil reached the last round of the qualifying window, as did Uruguay. Chile and Colombia are fighting for the last place. The grouping for the second phase of the Qualifiers is also already defined, with the United States, Puerto Rico and Mexico guaranteed.

In this second moment, all the teams carry the results of the first phase, and they only play against the teams that they have not yet faced. Thus, we will have round trips between Brazil x Mexico, the United States and Puerto Rico. After the end of the duels, the top three + the best fourth place between groups E and F qualify for the 2023 World Cup, adding seven places for the Americas in the competition.

World Cup 2023

The World Cup runs from August 25 to September 10, 2023, with Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia sharing the right to host the competition. The competition will feature 32 teams, with eight groups of four teams in the first phase. The top two teams from each group advance to the next stage of the World Cup, when they form a new group of four teams against rivals from another group. The two best will go to the round of 16 from the quarter-finals.
