Women’s Goalball Team Defeats Canada to Win Bronze at IBSA World Games

The Brazilian women’s goalball team beat Canada 2-0 this Sunday 27 and won the bronze medal at the IBSA World Games. The match was played at the CBS Arena, Coventry, England.

Despite this good result, the Brazilian team failed to secure a place at the Paris Paralympic Games in 2024. Only the champion team of the tournament would obtain a place at Paris-2024.

In November, at the Parapan American Games in Santiago, Chile, the women’s team will have the last chance to stamp their passport for the Paralympic Games. As with the IBSA World Games, only the champion will guarantee a place at Paris-2024.

How was the game
Brazil started the match with Dani Longhini and Carol Duarte, on the wings, and Gaby, in pivot. In a very balanced duel, the defenses got the better of the first half and the score remained level.

The start of the second half was similar, with the defenses taking the upper hand. Until in the 6th minute, Carol Duarte opened the scoring for the Brazilian team.

Two minutes later, Brazil had the opportunity to extend after the Canadians committed a penalty. Carol Duarte took advantage of the opportunity and scored her second, securing third place for the Brazilian team.

Brazilian national team campaign
In Group B of the tournament, the Brazilian team enjoyed a 100% success rate in the first phase, beating Ukraine 9-0, Finland 9-1 and Germany 11-1.

In the quarter-finals, the Seleção faced the English hosts. In a closely contested match, the Brazilians won 3-2, guaranteeing a place in the semi-finals, against Japan.

Against the Japanese, Brazil even took the lead, but was tied 1-1 in regulation time and overtime. Japan beat the Brazilian team on penalties, 3-2.

In the final of the tournament also played this Sunday 27, China beat Japan 3-0 and won the title. The Chinese team has secured a place at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

About the 2023 IBSA World Games
The competition organized by the International Blind Sports Federation takes place at the University of Birmingham, England, and the CBS Arena, Coventry, until August 27 and brings together more than 1,250 athletes from 70 countries who will compete face: football for the blind. (in the World Cup), goalball, archery, chess, cricket, B2/B3 football, powerlifting, showdown, bowling and tennis.

This is the seventh edition of the World Games, organized for the first time in Madrid in 1998. Since then, they have hosted: Quebec-CAN (2003), São Paulo-BRA (2007), Antalya-TUR (2011), Seoul -KOR (2015) and Fort Wayne-USA (2019).
