The Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region of Brasilia unanimously decided that the authorization of the company Belo Sun, in the region of Volta Grande do Xingu, in Pará, will be under the responsibility of Ibama and no longer the state environmental agency.

The decision of the 6th Panel of the TRF-1 was taken this Monday (11). In a note, the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainability of Pará informed this Wednesday (13) that it is “awaiting the publication of the result of the judgment and the official notification of the decision for the next stages of the process.”

Semas even issued two licenses: the Environmental License (LP), in 2014, and the Installation License (LI) for the project, in 2017. According to the Canadian mining company, both remain in force after the TRF-1 decision .

Belo Sun chairman Peter Tagliamonte said the company was ready to work with Semas and Ibama in the environmental clearance process for the Volta Grande Project (PVG).

In April 2017, TRF-1 suspended the effects of the installation license granted by the Government of Pará to the Canadian mining company. Since then, the process has remained unclear as to which authority was competent to issue environmental permits for the project.
