Yesterday (07/08), it was Group B’s turn to play their second round of the Concacaf Women’s Championship. The Estadio Universitario in Monterrey, Mexico saw Costa Rica beat Trinidad and Tobago and Canada beat Panama.

At 18′, Cristin Granados shot from the edge of the area to open the scoring, scoring the first for Costa Rica.

Things got even better for the Costa Ricans when, at 22′, Kedie Johnson received his second yellow card, leaving the Trinidad and Tobago side one less.

At 33′, Granados takes a corner that the Caribbean Lauryn Hutchinson deflects into the net, scoring an own goal in favor of Costa Rica.

The Costa Ricans continued to press until, at 46′, Granados scored his second goal. She slammed her left foot straight into the back of the goal.

The fourth and final goal of the match came at 48′, when Alvarado kicked the ball straight from outside the box. Closing of the match at 4 to 0 for Costa Rica.

Without forgetting that in the second half, at 62′, the legendary player Shirley Cruz won her 100th cap for Costa Rica.

The Panamanian team focused on defense and only let the Canadians score at 63′. With help from Janine Beackie, Julia Grosso faked the defender and kicked straight into the back of the net.

The match ended 1-0.

Next steps

Despite the low score, Canada are already assured of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand, as are Costa Rica, who secured a worst-case second place in the group. B.

Costa Rica will close the group against Canada while Panama will try to recover and reach the playoffs in their match against Trinidad and Tobago.
