A sports player was one of the targets of Operation Penalidade Máxima II, launched by the Public Ministry of Goiás to investigate suspicions of manipulation of the results of football matches (understand more below). Left-back Igor Cariús, 29, had his national driving license, mobile phone and laptop seized.

Last year, Igor Cariús played for Cuiabá, playing 32 games. During his career he also played for the following teams: Iguatu, Barbalha, Quixadá, Coruripe, ASA, Paraná, CRB and Atlético-GO.

Igor Cariús attended the team’s training this Tuesday morning and travels with the Red-Black delegation to Fortaleza, to face Ceará, Wednesday (19), in the first leg of the Copa do Nordeste final.

The left-back is looking for a private lawyer to handle the case. Despite being asked, the player’s press service has not taken a position on the case, until the last update of this report.

  • it started in February of this year;
  • covers six states and 16 cities, including Recife;
  • investigating alleged irregularities in at least five 2022 Serie A matches, but the specific matches have not been disclosed;
  • it is also investigating suspicions of manipulation of results in the state championships of Goiás, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso and São Paulo – all last year;
  • in the first phase, he served nine search and seizure warrants.

  • the criminal group bribed players, who received between R$50,000 and R$100,000 to perform specific actions during matches;
  • there are indications that the behavior requested from the players was intended for those investigated to make high profits in the bets made on the websites of the sports houses;
  • bettors offered athletes to score penalties in the first half of each game;
  • if the players accepted, the “deposit” was paid;
  • after the game, if the penalty had been taken, the players would receive the rest of the combined amount.
