Bia Haddad’s campaign at the WTA 1000 in Montreal is over. The Brazilian was knocked out by Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the second round of the tournament at 2:55 a.m. on Wednesday, August 9. The end result was 7/5, 5/7 and 6/3 for the world number 81.

“First of all, Leylah played better. I think she deserved to win because she was more aggressive. And in the tough times he was playing better than me. I wish him the best for this week. I know that it’s special for her to play at home,” Bia said at the post-match press conference.

It was the third game between the two and Fernandez ended up leveling the numbers making it 2-1 in the call face-to-face. The next opponent of the tennis player of the house will be the North American Danielle Collins who eliminated the Greek Maria Sakkari. The North American confrontation is scheduled for 8 p.m. (Brasília time), this Thursday.

“It took me a long time to learn because in this kind of big tournament, if you don’t think big, if you’re not aggressive, it’s hard to win even if you fight to the end. My level today (yesterday) was lower than I would have liked,” Bia explained.

Bia will fall in the ranking

With the result, Haddad Maia will fall in the rankings, according to the site Live WTA Ranking, from 12th to 19th place, for now. The 27-year-old tennis player could fall again at the end of the tournament. The Brazilian defended 650 points in the final of the previous edition of the Canadian Open.

The fact is that now the player from São Paulo is leaving for the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati, also on fast courts. She did not pass the course, in 2022, in the California litigation. As such, she has a good chance of catching up, among the top seeds of the next U.S. Open .
