Brazil to send aid to Canada to fight forest fires

The Brazilian government will be reimbursed for expenses incurred in sending firefighters and specialists from federal agencies

Brazil will send firefighters and experts from various federal agencies to help fight wildfires in Canada, informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this Wednesday (July 19, 2023). The North American country is suffering from record fires this year.

According to Itamaraty, the mission will be made up of 104 experts in fighting forest fires, who will stay in Canada for 1 month. As determined by the Canadian government, Brazil’s expenses for sending the aid will be reimbursed.

Last week, the government announced that Brazil would send 39 firefighters to help fight the fires in Canada. As up to now, the request for help came from the government in Ottawa, which will cover the costs of sending staff.

Since May this year, the number of fires in Canada’s forests has increased, with around 10 million hectares already burned across the country. After the North American country requested international assistance, foreign firefighters from different nations are working throughout the territory to help Canadian firefighters.

“What is extraordinary this year is that the fire season started early and in several areas at the same time” said the director of the Canadian Interagency Wildfire Center, Jennifer Kamau, as reported by the The New York Times.
