With the arrival of the World Cup, it is very common for the teams that will participate in the tournament to release new uniforms for the course of the competition. An example of this is the Brazilian team which released a new uniform with leopard details on the sleeves.

Unlike other teams, the Canadian team will not have a new uniform for the competition and will have to use the uniform released in the middle of last year for qualifying, and the reason is quite unusual.

Nike did not believe the team would go to the Cup

When Canada signed its contract with Nike, the selection was ranked number 78 in the FIFA rankings, with eight CONCACAF selections ahead of it, leading the sporting goods company to believe that the selection had no chance to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.

The fact that Canada are not getting new kits for the World Cup doesn’t sit well with some players: “I’m not a fan of it, to be honest,” Canadian defender Sam Adekugbe told The Athletic, “J I feel like every team should buy a new kit for the World Cup because it’s a symbolic event. I don’t hate it, but I wish I had bought a new kit, just because it’s something to treasure.”

It is believed that the process of designing and creating a new Nike uniform can take around 18 months. For a kit to be released alongside the other Nike World Cup kits this month, this process should begin around March 2021.

Canada will be making their first appearance at the World Cup since 1986 and hope to make even more history in this 2022 edition.
