Canada’s spy agency investigates death threats from Iran – News

Canada’s spy agency said Friday it was investigating death threats against people in Canada by Iran, days after Britain made similar allegations against the Islamic regime.

The Canadian Intelligence Service (CSIS) “is actively investigating multiple death threats from the Islamic Republic of Iran based on reliable information,” CSIS spokesman Eric Balsam told AFP.

“In short, these hostile activities and foreign interference undermine the security of Canada and Canadians, as well as our democratic values and our sovereignty,” he added.

No details of the investigation were provided, but Balsam said the agency was working with its international partners.

CSIS is also aware that Iran monitors and intimidates people in Canada, including members of the Iranian diaspora, in an effort to “silence those who speak publicly against” the regime, he added.

Last week, the British government accused Tehran of threatening the lives of UK-based journalists.

“Today I summoned the Iranian Chargé d’Affaires after some journalists working in the UK were the target of immediate death threats from Iran,” the British Minister for Foreign Affairs tweeted last Friday. Foreign Affairs James Cleverly.
