Canadian government says it made striking public servants ‘last offer’

Canadian government negotiators have presented a “final proposal” to striking civil servants, the Treasury Board of Canada has said, aimed at ending a dispute that has disrupted services such as tax returns and passport renewals.

The strike by federal civil servants, represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada, entered its 11th day on Saturday.

The union leader representing 155,000 striking public servants this week accused the government of blocking talks and urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to get involved in the matter.

The Treasury Board, which oversees public administration, said it delivered its proposal to the union on Friday.

Government negotiators said details are reserved for the negotiating table, but the proposal includes “an improved wage offer” and addresses issues such as “remote working, seniority and hiring”.

“This is a fair, competitive and reasonable final proposal,” the Treasury Board said in a statement.

On Wednesday, the union said it would step up strikes in a bid to blockade several Canadian ports.
