Justin Trudeau shakes hands with Kim Jin-pyo in Seoul

The prime minister of Canada
, Justin Trudeau
, sparked controversy when he took a photo with his “legs spread” during an official visit to South Korea last Wednesday (17). The Canadian press criticized the head of government, while the South Koreans approved of Trudeau’s attitude.

The Prime Minister of Canada is 1.88m tall, while the Speaker of the Korean National Assembly, Kim Jin-pyo, is around 1.70m tall. Before attending the G7 meeting in Japan, Justin traveled to Seoul to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, as well as to sign new agreements.

Before addressing the National Assembly, Trudeau spoke with local politicians and was spotted shaking hands with Jin-pyo. As they shook hands, Kim stood on her tiptoes to mock the difference in height between the two.

The Canadian liked the good mood and lowered it a bit. The President of the Assembly bends down on tiptoe and Trudeau spreads his legs a little. The couple burst out laughing and were photographed.

The media reaction

South Korean journalists praised the behavior of the Prime Minister of Canada. Channel Chosun experts said the scene was “touching” and showed Trudeau’s empathy. Broadcaster YTN reported that the Canadian has a ‘caring mentality’.

But the view of the press in Canada was completely different. Conservative newspaper True North blasted the country’s Prime Minister, accusing him of starring in another ’embarrassing’ scene abroad.
