Canadian tourist dies after falling in Iguazu Falls – 10/19/2022 – Daily life

A 58-year-old Canadian tourist was found dead at the Iguaçu Falls, in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, around 7 p.m. on Tuesday (19). It was located near the Tancredo Neves bridge, in the Brazilian part of the park, by employees of a company that carries out nautical excursions.

The incident was recorded on the Argentinian side of the dam, in the city of Puerto Iguazú, around 11 a.m. last Monday (17). Iguazú National Park said in a statement that the matter is under police investigation and that “out of respect for those involved in the event and in order not to interfere with the investigation, no statement will not be made at this time”.

According to a note released by Argentine authorities, the Civil Police investigation of hotels in Puerto Iguazú determined that the tourist showed up at one of them to check in. While waiting to be seen, he suddenly asked for a taxi and left the hotel for the national park.

Also according to the press release, witnesses reported that the Canadian climbed the fence and fell into the water, then disappeared. It is not yet known whether he jumped or wanted to take a selfie at the time of the accident.

Brazil’s Iguaçu National Park advisory has informed that a photo of a man in the waters of the river circulating on the internet is not confirmed to be that of the tourist.

Paraná Forensic Science said it was working on investigations with the Police Identification Institute. To confirm the tourist’s identification, the Canadian consulate in Brazil also collects documents.

The search for the tourist lasted about 32 hours. Rescue teams from Argentina and the national park immediately started work, but found it difficult due to the intense water flow in the falls in recent days, following heavy rains in the area since the last week. The Iguaçu Falls walkway in Paraná was closed for three days.

Last Thursday, the water flow reached 16.5 million liters per second, a volume 11 times higher than the average flow, which is 1.5 million liters per second.

Iguaçu National Park is a natural World Heritage Site and has the largest set of waterfalls in the world. According to the park, more than one million people from 142 different countries have visited the site this year.
