Davi Silva and Jonathan in the quarter-finals of the Mexico Challenge

Brazil had a day of ups and downs at the Mexico Badminton Challenge on Thursday (4). As a result, only two teams from the country continue in the tournament to play the quarter-finals. Davi Silva and Jonathan Matias won two matches to move into the top 8 of the men’s doubles tournament, while Fabrício Farias and Jaqueline Lima qualified in the mixed tournaments.

Davi Silva and Jonathan Matias started the day playing for the first round of the Mexico Challenge men’s doubles group. The result was a resounding victory over Canadians Hooman Bagheri and Derek Yu: 8/21 and 9/21. Next, Davi and Jonathan took on Hock Lai Lee and Garret Tan of the United States. Once again the Brazilians won 2-0, but now with a double 21/15. In the next phase, they face another American duo, formed by Vinson Chiu and Joshua Yuan.

Still in men’s doubles, Francielton and Fabrício Farias started the day with a 21/16 and 21/19 win over Peruvians José Guevara and Diego Mini. But in the next match, the pair lost to Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestegaard by 21/10 and 21/4.

Mixed doubles and women’s doubles

In mixed doubles, Fabrício Farias and Jaqueline Lima managed to reach the quarter-finals. Going straight to the round of 16, the Brazilians beat Mexico’s Luis Armando Montoya and Miriam Rodriguez by 24/22 and 21/18. Thus, they continue in the competition and face Miha Ivanovic and Petra Polanc of Slovenia in the quarter-finals.

Davi Silva and Sania Lima beat the Mexicans Armando and Haramara Gaitan by a double 21/11. But in the Round of 16, the Brazilian duo lost to Jan Voelker and Stine Kuespert of Germany on 11/21, 21/17 and 11/21.

Finally, in women’s doubles, Sania Lima and Juliana Vieira lost to North Americans Kalea Sheung and Joline Su in the round of 16. The American pair won the second leg 17/21, 21/17, 21/15.

Jonathan and Ygor eliminated in singles

Individually, Brazil still had two representatives in the round of 16 of the men’s group. But Jonathan Matias and Ygor Coelho lost this Thursday (4). Jonathan was the first to enter the court and was beaten by Jan Louda of the Czech Republic by 21/16 and 21/13. Then Ygor Coelho lost to Ukrainian Danylo Bosniuk on 21/17 and 21/13.
