Fernando Alonso seems happier than ever in Formula 1. With Aston Martin, the Spaniard has been on the P3 podium four times this season, with five races contested and was P4 in the other. Alonso is yet to win with the British team, but in principle Aston Martin seems to be the main candidate to take advantage, should Red Bull ever have any problems.
Aston Martin has always said that ultimately they will seek nothing less than the F1 title. Without a doubt, it was music to Alonso’s ears, also knowing that huge investments were being made to make this dream a reality. At Alpine, which Alonso has raced for the past two seasons, the Spaniard apparently didn’t think victories would be a reality soon.
However, Alpine were negotiating a contract renewal with Alonso in the middle of last year when Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll made history.
“I got a call from Lawrence asking if I was already committed to Alpine,” Alonso told The New York Times. “I said not yet. My discussions with Alpine were well advanced, but I didn’t have anything on paper, so he asked me: “If I send you something on paper today, will you think about it?” Alonso said.
Throughout the day, the Spaniard actually received an official offer from the Canadian businessman. “He sent it, I was happy, and since there was nothing on the other side, it was an easy decision. Everything went faster thanks to our relationship over the years,” said the veteran pilot to the American newspaper, highlighting the regular good contact he has had with the Stroll family over the years.
