From July 5 to August 27, it takes place in São Paulo, in the exhibition space of the Fiesp Cultural Center, the International Festival of Electronic Languages – FILE 2023.

The traditional exhibition provides insight into the production of works that explore the intersection between art and technology, promoting talks, workshops and other activities. This year there are 183 entries from 302 artists from 39 countries.

The visit to the main exhibition takes place from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., free entry.

The theme of the current edition of the festival is “Interactive Singularities”, a reference to the science fiction hypothesis that the mutual interaction between artificial intelligences (AI) and humans would lead to the development of simulated consciousness. , that is, of an artificial “I”, which could dialogue with the “natural self”, exchanging information and experiences in different ways.

This idea, according to Paula Perissinotto and Ricardo Barreto, curators and co-founders of FILE, goes against the idea that AI will soon become autonomous and self-aware.

The FILE São Paulo 2023 program includes the main exhibition, an installation at the entrance to the Fiesp Cultural Center, projections of works on the facade of the building, partnerships with other institutions, workshops and an installation in the metro .

Organized in partnership with SESI-SP since 2004, the festival is an event where the public can interact and discover the most innovative elements of the union between art, science and technology.

The idea is that visitors can actively interact with these works and, thus, learn from these aesthetic experiences. The public will be confronted with new possibilities of thinking and acting in a less massified technological world, in addition to adapting to the accelerated development of new forms of Art, not only aesthetic, but also intelligent.

Strong points

One of the works in the exhibition is the interactive installation “Expanded Iris” (2022), by Brazilian artist Anaisa Franco, which invites visitors to look through a device called by the artist “space iriscope”. The instrument scans the person’s iris and projects its image mixed with galaxies and nebulae. The idea is that the public can look into the micro-universe of the iris and find similarities with the universe of galaxies.

Finnish artist Hanna Haaslahti presents the installation “Captured” (2021), which captures the visitor’s face and creates a digital avatar for it in a collective staging of the virtual world. The idea of this work, which explores photorealistic capture and 3D technologies, is that, by seeing their digital double, the person becomes both a spectator and an actor in the work.

The Canadian duo Victor Drouin-Trempe (V.ICTOR) and Jean-Philippe Côté (Djip.Co) bring to the exhibition the installation “Empreintes Sonores” (2022), which offers a reflection on the digital traces we leave in contemporary life. In practice, a voice-controlled digital assistant discreetly listens to and records the sounds emitted by the people present in the establishment. These sound recordings are mixed and transformed into an image. Through the use of motion sensors, visitors can follow the tracks of sound waves, interfering with the reproduction of the original sounds.

Facility

Upon entering the Fiesp Cultural Center, the public is confronted with the installation “Light Falls” (2021), by the Brazilian Vigas (Leandro Mendes Vigas). At 5 meters high, the work in the form of a waterfall offers a reflection on the importance of water and the preservation of nature. The work is made up of large tubes that start from above and imitate the flow of water down to the ground, where they crisscross on the ground, creating the effect of water hitting stones. And in the background, visitors can hear the sounds of the Amazon rainforest.
