Shapovalov: ‘Difficult to play with the problem I have’

London, England) – Despite seeing his draw open at Wimbledon, only facing rivals lower than his own in the competition, Canadian Denis Shapovalov failed to get that far and ended up stop in the round of 16, beaten Sunday by the Russian Roman Safiullin, who obtained partials of 3/6, 6/3, 6/1 and 6/3.

“I have a lot of things on my mind. I don’t want to take the credit away from Roman in any way, that’s the first thing. I hope I can be healthy soon, I hope I can sort it out with my knee. It’s hard to play tennis with the problem I have.”, said the Canadian after being surprised by the current 92nd in the world.

“As the match progressed, it became unbearable. It’s normal because I didn’t do the full rehabilitation. It’s disappointing, of course. It also doesn’t help that I have a cold. It may take a bit longer to fully recover and I have a decision to make,” added Shapovalov, undecided on his next steps on the circuit.

Shapovalov did not achieve great results this season and arrived at Wimbledon with a negative record, adding 10 wins and 12 losses, leaving the competition with at least 50% success in the year (13 wins and 13 losses). His best result of the year was reaching the ATP 250 quarter-finals in Adelaide 1, in the first week of 2023.
