Smoke from the fires in Canada already covers the continent but dissipates on Thursday

“In the last hours, the cloud of smoke from the fires in Canada has covered the entire continent,” the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said in a statement posted on the website, adding that the cloud of smoke will affect the country until Thursday.

The forecasts of the CAMS service (Copernicus program) indicate an intensification during the day, in particular in the southern region of mainland Portugal.

“The cloud is also expected to intensify in the Azores region from tomorrow 28 and in Madeira from June 29,” he adds.

The IPMA points out that the cloud of smoke remained at altitude (above 1000 m) and “should dissipate” in the region of mainland Portugal from Thursday morning, still remaining in the Azores region.

The institute will continue to monitor the situation and may issue a further update, if necessary, he concludes.

The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) today released a clarification on the particulate levels in mainland Portugal and the Azores, advising that “they do not yet show” the influence, on the surface, of the smoke cloud from the fires in Canada.

The APA says particulate levels measured against air quality index classes remain at “good” and “very good” in mainland Portugal and the Azores.
