Smoke from Canadian wildfires harms air quality in U.S. cities

Air quality has deteriorated in the northern and northeastern United States due to raging wildfires across Canada. According to the authorities, there are several epidemics out of control and the consequences are already reaching New York City, located on the American east coast.

The latest update from the Government of Canada highlights 413 fires are burning in the country, which have already forced tens of thousands of people from their homes.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke to reporters to warn that this it will be a particularly severe fire season throughout the summer.

Year after year, with climate change, fires occur more intensely and in places where they would not normally occur.

The smoke respects no borders and has already darkened the skies of hundreds of Canadian and American cities. In New York, fog has drastically reduced visibility and skyscrapers have almost disappeared from the horizon.

During the night, the city ​​recorded the worst air quality in the world for a few hours and at dawn the air still smelled scorched and no sign of blue skies.

According to Johns Hopkins University physician Peter Decarlo, people should limit the time they spend outdoors and avoid strenuous exercise.

In addition to New York, the Canadian smoke also reached Washington, where the White House is located. The impact on air quality in the United States alone is felt in 18 states, home to 65 million people.
