The unexpected success of Toronto Raptors in the current NBA season directly reflects the preference of young sports fans in the Canada. A survey developed by Angus Reid Institute highlighted that 40% of the country has decided to follow the playoffs of NBA after the team reached the final. One victory away from the championship title, the hegemony of hockey in the country is called into question.
The survey also asked people what they would do if they had to choose between watching the basketball final or the Stanley Cupdecision of the NHL. About 38% of Canadians have followed the tradition of practicing this sport on ice. However, 33% of respondents said they would watch basketball, while 29% said they would watch nothing.
The fact is that, among young people, the popularity of basketball is evolving. Among the 18 to 34 year olds, the finals of NBA are more important than those of hockey. Among older people, men over 55, the preference is for hockey (49% would watch the NHL, compared to 30% the NBA). Among women, the difference is smaller, 37% versus 29%.
Finally, the poll also shows that Canadians are with the team: 47% of people already consider the national team. With 3-1 on the scoreboard, if the Raptors win tonight, they will win their first NBA title.
