Moving forward quickly in his career is no stranger to Jonathan David. The 22-year-old, who in four jumped from a small Canadian football club to the big stage of world football – the Champions League, where he faces Chelsea this Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the round of 16 – had “three nationalities”. “in six years.

Born in New York, Jonathan moved with his family to Haiti as a baby, where he remained until he was six years old. From there he immigrated to Canada, taking his first steps in his career as a professional player, playing in the base of some teams before moving to Belgium.

Signed by Genk, Jonathan David needed just six months at the base to catch the eye and be called up to the first team, where he scored 30 goals in 60 games. Having stood out in Belgium, he was bought by Lille in 2020 – being French champions the same season and securing a place in the coveted Champions League.

David seeks to write the history of the team and the country

In the current season, the striker, who can also play as a midfielder, has scored 17 goals in 37 matches. The number is already higher than last season, when he netted 13 times in 48 games. The performance improvement comes at the right time because the challenges are greater.

In addition to defending the national title from Lille, David is trying to make history with the French team in the Champions League. Both challenges are very difficult, since in Ligue 1 the team is in sixth place, and in the continental tournament the advantage of Chelsea, the opponent of this fourth, is two goals.

At least on another front, the young player has had more success. Alongside Bayer Munich’s Alphonso Davies, he led Canada to a historic qualification for this year’s World Cup, set to be the country’s second (the other was in 1986).

Next steps

By facing greater challenges, Jonathan David progresses to greater career milestones. Having distinguished himself for two seasons with Lille, the Canadian has continued to chain transfers to the European giants. PSG, who could rework the squad for next year, stand out as one of the main candidates for his signature.
