Guilherme Schmidt wins gold at Budapest Grand Slam

On the second day of competitions in Hungary, Guilherme Schmidt was right to Saied Mollaei (Azerbaijan), current world number nine and Olympic vice-champion, and won gold in the 81 kg category at the Budapest Grand Slamthis Saturday (9).

This is the 21-year-old judoka’s second Grand Slam gold medal this year. In April, he won first place in the Turkish GS.

En route to gold, Guilherme beat German Tim Gramkow on his debut, Askerbii Gerbekov (Bahrain) in the round of 16 and Canadian Francois Gauthier Drapeau in the next phase.

The fight against Mollaei was even. Normally, the two opponents have studied each other a lot. With 30 seconds remaining in regulation time, each athlete had already received two penalties.

In the golden score, Schmidt managed to increase his offensive volume and imposed difficulty on the opponent’s game. Mollaei won the third shido and the Brazilian took the victory, in addition to 1000 points in the world ranking.

Fifth place for women

in the female, Ketlyn Quadros (Bronze at Beijing 2008), came off the podium in the under 63 kg category. The judoka lost bronze to Venezuelan Anriquelis Barrios, number 3 in the world ranking. Carvajal del Toro took the other bronze in the category. Japan’s Megumi Horikawa won gold and Poland’s Angelika Szymanska silver.

Guilherme won Brazil’s second medal of the competition. On Friday, Rafaela Silva had already won silver in the under 57 kg category, after losing the fight to Japan’s Haruka Funakubo.
