Latifi, who finished second in the 2019 Formula 2 championship, was told by williams in September that this season, his fourth with the team, his third as a racing driver, would also be his last.

Since then, there has been speculation linking the 27-year-old Canadian to various IndyCar units, including the legendary Chip Ganassi Racingwho has not yet announced a replacement for jimmy johnsonalongside the incumbents Scott Dixon, Alex Palou and Marcus Ericsson.

But ahead of the United States GP at the Circuit of the Americas, Latifi denied deciding which series to race in next year, let alone which team.

“Honestly, I’m still not committed to anything, I haven’t signed anything, I’m still not further along to have concrete news to share,” he said. “I learned in the last few days that I had already signed a contract to race in IndyCar, which I found a bit funny.

“But I’ve spoken to a few different teams in different categories and I’m still not like, ‘OK, it’s this or nothing’. So there’s still a lot of things up in the air.

“In a way it’s a bit…”boring” isn’t the word, but obviously I’m still focused on finishing the rest of the year in the best possible way and finishing this chapter with Williams on a positive note.

“Obviously a lot of other series have been completed for a while and things are moving fast in motorsport and this is a time when everyone wants to sort out their drivers and situations as quickly as possible. There is not so long since i officially found out [que estava sendo liberado]… It was just before Singapore.

“So yes, there are still ongoing discussions, but nothing ready to announce.”

Latifi said he had no preference as to which series to race in 2024, adding: “I don’t just look at formula cars but also endurance racing. I’m not 100% sure if I want to do this or that championship.

“It’s just listening and trying to understand what the situation is with teams and leagues, how it can be for me and my life in the future as well. I have to make a decision for myself and then immerse myself in it.

However, he admitted that after driving “difficult” Williams cars for three years, the fact that IndyCar runs on the Dallara’s specific chassis is one of the main attractions of American racing.

“Yeah, that’s definitely one of the draws of the show,” he agreed. “Obviously in the special races everyone has a more equal chance. It’s something I’ve definitely missed over the past few years. Every once in a while we’re in a position where we’re a bit more competitive for a race and we can have battles on the track, but obviously we don’t do that every race – most of the time it’s not not the case.

“So for sure that’s what I missed, and yes, I would really look forward to it if I joined the category where it’s more equal.”

When asked if he was being drawn into talks about his future a bit sooner than he wanted, and if he would prefer to wait until the end of the F1 season in Abu Dhabi, Latifi replied: ” If it were up to me, yes, but obviously, realistically, that’s not how it can happen. Even in Formula 1, most teams don’t wait until the last race…

“Yes, that’s how motorsport is, and you can understand the need for teams and drivers to have their future sorted out as soon as possible; it’s always better to be in that position.
