Meta will remove news from Facebook and Instagram in Canada

The concern is that the method of identifying journalistic vehicles will let less reliable communication companies pass

Meta said it would remove the news from its social media in Canada if the country’s online news law is passed. The bill, which requires big tech companies like Google and Meta to negotiate with media outlets for the use of content on their platforms, was passed by Canada’s parliament. The tech company then followed through on the measure, just as it had already done in Australia in 2021. Later, however, Canberra withdrawn from decisioncausing the owner of Facebook to do the same.

In the case of Canada, the announced goal What “started the process of ending news availability“and that changes”will be rolling out to everyone who accesses Facebook and Instagram in Canada over the course of a few weeks.

A big tech currently working on media identification”based on legislative definitions and guidelines of the Online Information Act”. American journalist Josh Benton explained how news organizations are defined in the new Canadian law:

  • qualifying Canadian journalism organizations under the Income Tax Act;
  • Canadian organizations that produce news content focused on issues of public interest, provided they employ at least 2 journalists and abide by a journalistic code of ethics;
  • licensed college, community or native stations; Or
  • Native news organizations run by Native people.

The result could be the removal of access to almost all legitimate news organizations, but leaving connections for vehicles with a bad reputation, blogging and news published by individuals.

Canadian Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez told the seattle time which vehicles will or will not be considered a means of communication under the law: “There is a set of criteria that must be met to be considered eligible to negotiate with tech giants…we have a set of criteria that must be met by media companies to sit at the table negotiations”. The media that would be allowed to “try yourself at the table” are the ones that Meta will remove.

The technology company did not specify whether the Newly Posted Discussions – competing short messaging platform of X (formerly Twitter) – will be affected by the changes.

Read what changes, according to target:

  • for Canadian media: You connections and content posted by news publishers and broadcasters in Canada will no longer be visible to users of Meta’s social networks in Canada. News outlets are identified based on legislative definitions and guidelines of the Online News Act;
  • for international news agencies: news publishers and broadcasters outside of Canada will continue to be permitted to publish connections and news content. However, these publications will not be seen in Canada;
  • for the Canadian community: people in Canada will not be able to view or share news content on Facebook and Instagram, including articles and audio-visual content;
  • for the international community: there will be no changes to services for people accessing Meta’s platforms outside of Canada.

In the evaluation of big techthe legislation is based on the mistaken assumption that Meta is unfairly profiting from news content shared on our platforms, when the reverse is true“said Meta in his Blog. When the company deleted the news in Australia, traffic to news sites has dropped.

Already for the head of the association News Media CanadaPaul Degan,without access to news based on real events created by real journalists, Facebook will become much less attractive for users and advertisers”.
