69 years ago, when São Paulo celebrated its 400th anniversary, an extensive program of celebrations took place throughout 1954.

Important monuments of the city such as the Sé Cathedral, Ibirapuera Park (designed by Oscar Niemeyer) and cultural events such as the International Film Festival, the II Biennial of Plastic Arts, the Ballet of the IV Centenary and the International Industrial Exhibition, were memorable landmarks of this ceremony.

Unforgettable the “money rain”.

The agenda began to be set in 1950 when the then mayor of São Paulo, Armando de Arruda Pereira (former adviser to São Bernardo and former director of Cerâmica São Caetano), appointed the businessman Francisco Matarazzo to chair the organizing committee of the festivities. nicknamed Ciccillo, the same man who had inaugurated, a year earlier, in São Bernardo, the Vera Cruz Film Company.

The São Paulo Press has made generous spaces available for the dissemination of the diverse program, taking the opportunity to publish several editions and thematic sections on the history, culture and progress of the capital of all São Paulo.

The commemorative edition of “Folha da Manhã” (current Folha de São Paulo) published with the double date of January 24 and 25, is symbolic for having registered a significant amount of messages alluding to the event, by companies located in the ABC, future Grand ABC.

Another highlight is a special section, included in the same edition, entitled “Mayors of the IV Centenary”. The publication lists, by name, all the mayors of the municipalities of São Paulo holding office in that year, 1954.

Four mayors received special mention, each covering a full page with biographical data and respective achievements: Jânio Quadros (São Paulo); Fioravante Zampol (Santo André); Lauro Gomes (São Bernardo) and Anacleto Campanella (São Caetano). Eloquent proof of the economic, political and commercial importance that ABC already represented.
