The Rector receives the MP and discusses issues related to health in Campinas and the region

The rector of Unicamp, Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles, received, this Friday morning (11), the State Deputy Rafael Zimbaldi in an audience during which issues related to the health sector were discussed , notably the installation of a regional hospital in Campinas. The audience also included the participation of Doctor Oswaldo Grassiotto, executive director of the Unicamp Health Area (Deas).

The director of Deas presented the deputy with some data which, according to him, highlights the need to install in Campinas a regional hospital that provides care of low and medium complexity. According to him, this would be a way to relieve the Hospital de Clínicas (HC) of Unicamp — created to provide very complex care, such as elective surgeries, transplants, cardiac and neurological operations, among other procedures — but which is now largely dedicated to emergency care.

According to Grassiotto, the new hospital could be a reference for the Campinas Metropolitan Region (RMC) — which currently has 3.2 million inhabitants — and for the State Administrative Region, which would cover around 6.5 million people. .

The data highlights the need to establish a regional hospital in Campinas that provides low and medium complexity care.

According to him, the number of beds per thousand inhabitants in the RMC is the lowest in the state of São Paulo. According to a survey carried out by Unicamp technicians, presented for the first time by Grassiotto to a group of at least 30 mayors from the RMC, the Mogiana region and the Circuito das Águas, in March of this year, the average number of beds per thousand the number of inhabitants is 2.5 in Brazil; it reaches 2.0 in the State of São Paulo and reaches an index of only 1.0 in the RMC.

The survey showed that more than 80% of admissions to health network hospitals occur in emergencies. The diagnosis also showed that 90% of the demand for the RRAS15 (Regional Health Care Network) hospital network — which includes the Health Department of Campinas and São João da Boa Vista — comes from the municipalities in the RMC health region.

According to the director, 60% of admissions to HC occur in emergency sectors, a procedure which reduces the hospital’s capacity to fulfill the role for which it was created. “We must return to the original vocation of the HC, which is great complexity,” he summarizes.

Before meeting the rector, the MP visited the Center for Hematology and Hemotherapy (Hemocentro Unicamp), the Center for diagnostics of diseases of the digestive system (Gastrocentro) and the Hospital da Mulher-Caism.
